What Is Whiskey? A Friendly Introduction for First-Time Sippers

Whether you're soaking up the sun, relaxing in the sand, or winding down with friends, there's one thing that ties it all together: the perfect pour. But if you're new to whiskey, you might be wondering—what exactly is it?

The Basics: What Whiskey Is Made From

Whiskey is a grain alcohol, which is fermented, distilled, and aged to produce the final spirit. The grains used in the mash may include:

  • Corn

  • Rye

  • Wheat

  • Barley

  • Oats

The flavor, texture (or “mouthfeel”), and overall character of whiskey are shaped by the grains used in its mash and the way they’re processed. The specific combination and proportion of grains—known as the “mash bill”—play a crucial role in defining each whiskey’s unique profile
